10 Things You Didn’t Know About…North Ferriby

Tenants

In this first in a new series, we find out more about the towns, villages and settlements that make up East Yorkshire. This month, we’re looking at North Ferriby, a vibrant, thriving and well connected village West of Hull that’s popular with families and professionals alike.

Whether you’re moving to the area for the first time and looking for a convenient, semi-rural location, or work in the city and want to escape to the country, North Ferriby is a fantastic place to live. Here’s our top 10 things you didn’t know about North Ferriby.

It’s a thriving East Yorkshire village

North Ferriby isn’t just a commuter settlement – it’s a thriving village in its own right. The village boasts a train station, a primary school (Ofsted Good, March 2017), a pub, an Italian restaurant, a fish and chip shop, a newsagent, a chemist, several hairdressers, a Co-Op, a post office, a squash club, an estate agent, a cricket club and a major football club – North Ferriby United!

It’s well connected

North Ferriby has excellent train links, with regular, convenient commuter services to Hull, York, Leeds, Doncaster and Sheffield. Popular with Hull commuters, it’s also located on the A63 dual carriageway, providing a direct road route into the centre of Hull in around 15 minutes.

It has Viking heritage

The Danes first arrived and settled in the area in the 9th century AD. Each Viking boat would have created its own village, and largest of these settlements in the area was named Ferja Bi (place by the ferry) – evidence suggests the village has been connected to South Ferriby since at least this time.

It has a fabulous foreshore

Part of the Yorkshire Wolds Way, the foreshore is full of wildlife and offers stunning views across the Humber estuary. A relaxing walk or bike ride of 2 ½ mile to the impressive Humber Bridge is a must, keep an eye out for passing ships and birds feeding on the mud flats of the River Humber.

It’s home to some ancient boats

In 1931, wooden planks belonging to some ancient boats were found on the foreshore at North Ferriby, and two further boats were discovered on the site. Dated between 2030BC and 1680BC, these bronze age boats are the earliest known, sewn-plank boats found in Europe. Historians speculate that these could well be Europe’s first known sea-craft! The boats are now housed in the National Maritime Museum.

The Knights Templar once called it home

Legendary religious crusader knights founded Ferriby Priory as a Preceptory in around 1160 – and it remained an important Augustine monastery after the suppression of the Templar order. It was eventually disbanded in 1536 under the reign of Henry VIII as part of the dissolution of the monasteries.

Mick Ronson used to play here

Legendary Bowie Guitarist and Spiders from Mars frontman Mick Ronson is a Hull icon – and he cut his musical teeth playing in local bands The Mariners and The Crestas during the early 60s. The Crestas were a big part of the local music scene, and built their reputation playing every Sunday at the Duke of Cumberland pub in North Ferriby.

The football team punches well above its weight

For a village of less than 4000 people, North Ferriby is a real footballing powerhouse! Last season, North Ferriby United played in the Vanarama National League – the 5th tier of English football, alongside big clubs like Lincoln City and Tranmere Rovers. In 2015, the club upset all the odds to beat Wrexham and take home the FA Trophy – the biggest cup competition outside the football league.

Weatherman Alex Deakin was born here

Met Office weatherman and former BBC News at 10 and BBC Breakfast weather anchor, Alex Deakin, was born in North Ferriby. In addition to his news and Met Office Work, he has also appeared on The Great Sport Relief Bake Off, Celebrity Mastermind and Countryfile.
